Obituary

“

James will be remembered with love as a devoted husband, father, brother, church member, veteran, and friend whose life was marked by faith, service, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.

James Robert Peterson, born May 17, 1946, passed away on October 9, 2026. He will be remembered with love as a devoted husband, father, brother, church member, veteran, and friend whose life was marked by faith, service, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.

James earned an Associate Degree from Hopkinsville Community College and went on to work at Phelps Dodge in production. He also served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the National Guard. His commitment to service extended beyond his work and military life into his church family as a member of First Street Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. That role was among the accomplishments he held with pride.

He enjoyed the things that made life rich and familiar: riding bikes, watching football, and listening to old school music. These everyday pleasures reflected a spirit that found meaning in connection, rhythm, and time shared with others.

Above all, James cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kaye Winston Peterson, and by their children, Tracy (Bonita) Peterson, Lamont (Junko) Peterson, Renee Peterson, Sheila (Leo) Gomez, and Jerome (Claudette) Shanklin. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria P. Stevenson, and by his close friend, Willie Kendrick. Those who knew James through family and friendship will remember the steady presence he brought to their lives and the love he shared so freely.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Chiles Peterson; his father, Samuel Peterson; his brothers, Charles Cross, George Peterson, and John Peterson; and his aunts, Betty Milligan and Dorothy Peterson. Their memories remained part of the story of his life and are now joined with his in rest.

Visitation for James Robert Peterson will be held on October 20, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at First Street Baptist Church, 812 Moayon Street, Hopkinsville, KY 42240. The funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, 5817 Fort Campbell Blvd, Hopkinsville, KY 42240.

James Robert Peterson leaves behind a legacy of devotion to family, commitment to faith, and honorable service to his country and community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
