His life was one of commitment, love, and lasting influence, and his memory will remain cherished by all who knew him.

James Harvey Thomas passed away on September 19, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on March 2, 1939, he lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to his family, faithful service to his church and community, and a warm spirit that drew people to him.

Mr. Thomas was a graduate of Attucks High School, Class of 1957. He went on to build a distinguished career at Thomas Industries, where he retired after 36 years of service. He was one of the first African American men hired at Thomas Industries and, in time, became the last surviving member of those five pioneering men. His working life reflected perseverance, dignity, and quiet strength.

He was deeply involved in the lives of his children, especially in sports, where he encouraged his boys and remained present in their activities. His favorite saying, “Be your man, and have your own,” captured the independence and personal responsibility he valued and shared with those he loved. He enjoyed talking and laughing with people and was known as someone who never met a stranger. He also loved watching football, especially alongside his daughter, Pam.

His commitment to community and fellowship was evident in the organizations and causes he supported. He was a member and past president of The Pioneer’s Inc. and was a member of the Coachmen Club for many years. His faith was central to his life, and he was a devoted member of Virginia Street Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, sang in the Men’s Choir, drove the church bus in earlier years, and was a member of the Woodland Heights Board. Through these roles, he gave generously of his time and presence and touched many lives.

Above all, James Harvey Thomas was a family man. He shared 66 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Katherine Elaine Thomas. Together, they built a family that remained a source of pride and joy throughout his life. He is survived by Katherine; by their children, Pamela (Peter) Brown, Gregory (Toni) Thomas, and Dwight Thomas; by his special cousin/brother, William "Bill" Torian; and by dear friends who held a special place in his life, including his lifetime friend Clifford Babb and special friends Sherill Jordan, Jr. and Thomas "Pinky" Boyd.

He also leaves behind a large and loving legacy in his grandchildren: Andreka, Terrence “TJ,” Derek, Payton, Anthony, Quentine, Brandon, Dorian, James, Skye, Lauryn, LeDrea, Tykia, and Tierre’; and in his great-grandchildren: Colin, Jr. “CJ,” Carlos, Calece, Javaughn, Darius, Jamal, Prince, and Jalyn; a host of cousins who affectionately called him "Uncle Harvey. Their lives stand as part of the continuing legacy of his love, guidance, and example.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Glass Kay, and his father, Harvey Thomas.

Visitation will be held on October 3, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Virginia Street Baptist Church, 209 South Virginia Street, Hopkinsville, Kentucky 42240. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will take place at Cave Springs Cemetery, 2120 Greenville Road, Hopkinsville, Kentucky 42240.
