Sarah Ann Poindexter Joseph, born May 23, 1944, to Earl McClyde Poindexter and Josephine Hopson Poindexter, passed away on August 30, 2026. She will be remembered with love for the care she gave to others, the joy she brought to everyday life, and the strong family bonds she cherished throughout her life.
Sarah worked as a domestic housekeeper, a role that reflected her caring nature and her dedication to serving others. She was a woman who found happiness in simple and meaningful pleasures. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, traveling, taking care of children, dancing, and playing Bingo. She was also known for taking care of people and feeding them, offering warmth and generosity in ways that made others feel welcome and loved. Sarah also played piano by ear, a gift that added to the spirit and joy she shared with those around her. She attended Pentecostal Church of Hopkinsville and a member of New Asia Baptist Church.
Her memory will be treasured by her family, including her son Curtis Dillard, her daughter Frances "Pumpkin" Martinez, her daughter Valerie "Pookie" Matlock, her son Carl (Dawn) Dillard, and her brother Waldo (Cecilia) Poindexter. Together, Sarah and her children Curtis Dillard, Frances Martinez, Valerie Matlock, and Carl Dillard shared a close family bond that remains a lasting part of her legacy.
She was preceded in death by her son Eric S. Dillard and her daughter Brenda Vining. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Herman Poindexter, Josephine Wisdom, Robert Poindexter, Preston Poindexter, Mary Oliphant, Nellie Hollowell, Mary Trice, Lucy Poindexter, Joseph Poindexter, Willie Poindexter, and James Poindexter. Sarah’s life touched many across her large family, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held on September 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Gamble Funeral Home, 1311 S. Liberty St., Hopkinsville, KY 42240. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Gamble Funeral Home.
Sarah Ann Poindexter Joseph will be remembered for her kindness, her generosity, her love of family, and the comfort she brought to others. May her memory bring peace and strength to all who mourn her passing.
